Car history:
1) This 1972 Corvette is what the Stingray became when it grew up. The '60s were over, and by 1972, the Corvette had become a well-respected grand tourer with great power, commendable handling, and a comfortable ride. With factory A/C, a strong-running small block, and a classic color combination, this one is also an affordable way to own a legend.
Restored a few years ago, the lovely code 972 Classic White finish on this Stingray is sophisticated and subtle, which helps this car establish its credentials as a first class piece for long-distance cruising. There's no question that this was a well-maintained and very clean car, so the body needed very little work before it was ready for paint. So it was stripped and two-stage urethane went on, giving it a shine that the original designers surely dreamed of, but never achieved with the paint technology of the time. A black stripe runs down the center of the hood and the rear has a blackout treatment reminiscent of the Baldwin-Motion 'Vettes of the '70s. And it was a thorough, trim-off job, too, not just a mask and spray quickie. All the jambs and sills have been thoroughly refinished, and only excellent original or fresh reproduction badges and chrome were reinstalled. As Corvette fans know, '72 was the last year for chrome bumpers front and rear, so these were refinished and reinstalled, too. It looks great.
Inside you'll find a code 404 black leather interior, which is a change from the original code 421 Saddle. But that also means everything is new, including seat covers, door panels, carpets, and even the dash pad. Woodgrained accents break up all the black and the workmanship is very nicely done. This car is also loaded with options like factory A/C, an AM/FM radio, power windows, and a tilt/telescoping wheel. Pull the body-colored T-tops and this coupe is almost as breezy as a convertible, making it the ideal choice for driving. You will, however, have to pack light, because C3 Corvettes are not known for storage capacity, although there's new carpet under the rear deck, plus a pair of useful storage compartments.
The original 350 was long gone, so it now carries a late 90's crate motor with Vortec heads. It's a great runner and the engine bay was detailed before it went in, including some chrome pieces like the valve covers, ignition shielding, and Chevrolet-logo air cleaner. Original parts like the A6 A/C compressor and alternator were retained, and there's a big 4-barrel carburetor to give it snappy throttle response and long-tube headers to bolster torque. The TH400 3-speed automatic transmission is built for performance and spins the original independent rear end, making this car a lot of fun to drive. It's quite clean underneath and there are plenty of new parts, including the stock-style exhaust system that has a nice rumble but never gets annoying. Classic Cragar mags are a great '70s addition that always look right on a Corvette, and they carry fat 235/60/15 BFGoodrich T/A radials that totally fill the fenders. 69,492 miles. BiN $27,995 (Ended) on June 10, 2017.
